Regulatory Response: TCFD (2023)

Overview:

Eaton (ETN), a leading sustainable energy solutions provider and one of Fortune’s Most Admired Companies, is committed to understanding the realities of climate and nature impacts. As part of its commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible business practices, and climate financial risk mitigation, Eaton aligns its sustainability strategy with the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). The TCFD framework helps companies assess and disclose climate-related risks and opportunities to investors, stakeholders, and regulators. To mitigate Eaton's climate risks and provide a thorough TCFD report with the most authoritative science-based information, Eaton selected Earth Knowledge and its Digital Twin to gather precise data, analyze climate impacts, and make informed strategic decisions.

Case Study Scenario:

  1. Data Collection and Integration: Eaton started by Earth Knowledge intersecting its global assets with the Digital Twin. Through a simple and collaborative process, Eaton provided the Earth Knowledge data science team with a list of its assets. To most accurately represent likely future conditions both SSP126 and SSP585 (“business as usual”) were considered.
  2. Climate Risk and Opportunity Assessment: After the intersection of its global assets with the Digital Twin and into the Earth Knowledge Foresight tool, Eaton gained insights into potential risks and opportunities associated with climate and nature change. They can now analyze how various climate scenarios might impact their energy projects and operations over different time frames (short, medium, and long-term future scenarios).
  3. Project Feasibility and Investment Decisions: Earth Knowledge Foresight can help Eaton to evaluate its physical asset risks as well as potentially the feasibility of upcoming renewable energy projects under different climate scenarios. They can now assess how global changes, extreme events, or resource availability might impact project returns, timelines, and operational efficiency. This information supports better investment decisions and risk management strategies.
  4. Resilience and Adaptation Strategies: With Earth Knowledge Foresight and Insight Services, Eaton can more effectively formulate robust climate adaptation and resilience strategies. These strategies include implementing technological improvements, diversifying energy sources, designing climate-resilient infrastructure, and enhancing supply chain resilience to withstand potential climate and nature-related disruptions.
  5. Investor Communication and TCFD Reporting: Armed with accurate climate data and projections, Eaton prepared a comprehensive TCFD report. This report transparently communicated their climate-related risks and opportunities, climate resilience strategies, emission reduction efforts, and progress toward their climate goals to investors, stakeholders, and regulators. The report showcases Eaton’s proactive approach to assessing climate and nature related risks and their commitment to sustainability.
